Frequently Asked Questions

Answers for attorneys, their staff, and examinees.

For attorneys and their staff

How do we schedule an independent medical examination?
Send us a request online with our Request an Exam form, or call 732-972-4771. Our office schedules the exam and contacts you with the doctor, office, date and time. Offices registered with MLE also use our attorney portal for records and reports.
Do you perform exams for both plaintiff and defense attorneys?
Yes. We work with plaintiff and defense attorneys in workers' compensation, personal injury and medical malpractice matters.
What types of workers' compensation exams do you perform?
Permanency (perm) evaluations, need-for-treatment exams, reopeners, second opinions and federal workers' compensation exams. When there is outside liability as well, the workers' compensation and personal injury exams can often be scheduled back to back with the same doctor.
What records and imaging should we send, and when?
Please upload medical records to the case in our attorney portal at least three weeks before the exam, so the doctor can review them. If records are not yet available, please upload them as soon as you receive them. Examinees should bring any X-ray, MRI or CT films or discs relevant to the exam. Examinees do not need to bring their medical records.
Can you review medical records or imaging without an exam?
Yes. Our neuroradiologist reviews imaging, and our physicians review records. Registered offices can send a correspondence request in the attorney portal and upload the studies there; other offices can use the request form, and we will reply with an estimate.
Do you handle medical malpractice cases?
Yes. Malpractice matters are reviewed by a physician in the specialty involved before anything is scheduled. Choose Medical Malpractice on the request form and describe the case.
How are depositions and trial testimony scheduled?
Please call our office at 732-972-4771 to schedule depositions, de bene esse testimony and trial testimony with the examining doctor.
Can an exam be rescheduled or cancelled?
Please call our office to reschedule or cancel an exam. Examinees can change some appointments online up to the day before the exam; when an appointment cannot be changed online, the page tells them whom to contact. Same-day changes and missed appointments may carry a fee.
Do you offer remote exams?
Yes, remote video exams are available for psychiatric evaluations.
Which languages do your doctors speak?
Dr. Carlos Figarola (psychiatry) and Dr. Gerardo Goldberger (orthopedic surgery) speak Spanish. MLE does not provide interpreters, so if your client needs one, please arrange for an interpreter to attend.

For examinees

What should I bring to my exam?
Your completed patient form and any X-ray, MRI or CT films or discs related to your exam. Please arrive a little early. If you have not filled out the form yet, you can complete it in the office.
Do I need to bring my medical records?
No. Your attorney's office sends your medical records to us before the exam. Please bring only your completed form and any X-ray, MRI or CT films or discs related to your exam.
I need an interpreter. What should I do?
MLE does not provide interpreters. Please bring an adult who can translate for you.
How do I reschedule or cancel my appointment?
Many appointments can be changed with Manage My Appointment, using your last name and date of birth. Some appointments cannot be changed online or by our office; if yours is one of them, the page will tell you whom to contact.
Where is my exam, and how do I get there?
Your appointment confirmation lists the office. Addresses and directions to all six offices are on our Locations page.
Will the doctor treat me?
No. An independent medical examination is an evaluation for your legal case. The doctor examines you and writes a report for the attorney or insurer; no treatment is provided.
